How to Read a Certified Hemp Planting Seed Tag

What should a grower read on a certified hemp planting seed tag?+

Read the variety, lot number, purity, germination, and test date on a certified hemp planting seed tag. Pure live seed is purity times germination. That figure, not the bag weight alone, is what you drill. Industrial hemp is not marijuana.

A certified hemp planting seed tag is the first page of the crop, and it is printed on the bag. Variety name, lot number, purity, germination, weed seed, and the date of the germination test are the lines that change the drill setting. Industrial hemp is not marijuana. It is fiber or grain at or below 0.3% total THC under the USDA AMS hemp rules. The tag does not replace that field sample. It tells you what you put in the ground.

AOSCA certification is the class on the label: breeder, foundation, registered, or certified. State seed law, under the Federal Seed Act, is why purity and germination have to be on the label at all. Read both. A variety name with no lot number is a story. A lot number with a stale germination test is a guess.

The association's spring planting guide recommends certified seed because the lot is traceable and the approval path is simpler. Buyers often name the variety before they name the price. Order certified hemp seed only after that name is on the contract.

What a Certified Hemp Planting Seed Tag Has to Show

Start at the top of the tag and do not skip to the price.

The variety has to match the contract. Ursa Alta is a fiber cultivar. Ursa Grande is the grain and dual-purpose cultivar. Those are different bags, covered in the fiber seed article and the grain seed article. Planting the fiber name on a food-grain contract is a tag error, not a harvest surprise.

Purity is the percent of the bag that is the crop seed. Germination is the percent of that pure seed that grew in the lab on the test date. Weed seed and other crop seed are the lines that dock a food lot later. Inert matter is the rest. Write the four numbers down before the seed tender pulls into the field.

The test date matters because germination falls in storage. A tag from last spring is not this spring's stand. If the date is old, ask for a retest or a newer lot. Do not "correct" a dead tag by adding a few pounds and hoping.

How to Turn a Certified Hemp Planting Seed Tag into a Rate

Pure live seed is the only pound that can become a plant. Bag weight includes everything else on the tag. A certified hemp planting seed tag left in the office cannot correct a thin stand after the drill has left.

Pure Live Seed on a Certified Hemp Planting Seed Tag

Multiply percent pure seed by percent germination, then divide by 100. A worked example: 98% pure and 90% germination is 88.2% pure live seed. That example is arithmetic, not a lot you can buy. Use the tag in your hand.

If the target is 40 pounds of pure live seed per acre, divide 40 by 0.882. You need about 45 pounds of that bag per acre. Skipping the math plants 40 pounds of bag weight and about 35 pounds of live seed. Thin stands are often a tag unread, not a drill that failed.

Class, Origin, and the Certified Hemp Planting Seed Tag

Foundation, registered, and certified are not three words for the same sack. Foundation and registered classes are for producing the next generation of seed. Certified class is what most commercial fields plant. Origin tells you where that lot was grown. Cornell's fiber seed increase has been in Arizona. A tag that says a different origin is a different lot, even when the variety name matches. Confirm the class with the offtake partner before the seed is on the farm.

Keep the Tag with the Field Map

Photograph the tag and file it with the field number. Inspectors and buyers ask for the lot after the bag is gone. The derisking note puts the buyer ahead of planting for the same reason: the paperwork is part of the crop. Depth and pounds per acre, once the tag is known, are the planting depth guide.

What Certified Hemp Planting Seed Does Not Cover

The tag is not a yield promise, a THC waiver, or permission to save the harvest as next year's seed.

The Field Sample Still Happens

A certified hemp planting seed tag can show a compliant variety and the field can still be sampled. Heat, stress, and a mixed stand move cannabinoids. The Cornell fiber pages walk through nondetectable rows and a 0.02% breeding figure side by side. Quote the lot you planted and the sample you took. Do not quote the tag as the field result.

Bin-Run Seed Drops the Name

Hemp is open-pollinated. Pollen from another variety in the neighborhood changes the next generation. Saved seed has no new germination test, no certification class, and no lot a buyer can file. If the contract says certified, bin-run is a different crop. Treat it that way on the purchase order.

Price the Lot, Then Plant

Commodity pricing is where the bid sits. Seed cost per acre is tag math: dollars per bag, times bags, times the pure-live adjustment. A cheap bag with 70% germination is often a costly acre. The FAQ covers the license questions neighbors ask. Trust is the lot number. Education is purity times germination. Profit is a stand you calculated before the drill moved.

FAQ

Quick answers from this article.

How do purity and germination become pure live seed?+

Multiply percent pure seed by percent germination and divide by 100. A tag at 98% pure and 90% germination is 88.2% pure live seed. Bag weight is higher than the live-seed rate.

Does a certified hemp seed tag replace the state THC sample?+

No. The tag documents the lot you planted. Your state still samples the crop. A certification label does not waive the 0.3% total THC check.

What seed classes can appear on a hemp certification label?+

AOSCA classes run from breeder to foundation, registered, and certified. The class is on the label. Ask which class the buyer will accept before you order.

Why does the association want a lot number on hemp planting seed?+

The lot number is what a buyer and an inspector can trace. The spring planting guide recommends certified seed for that paper trail and a simpler approval path.

Can bin-run hemp seed keep the variety name on a contract?+

Not as certified seed. Open-pollinated hemp mixes in the field. A saved bin loses the lot, the germination test, and the THC history the buyer filed.
