No-Till Hemp Planting: Soil Temperature, Drill, and Seedbed

When does no-till hemp planting work on a US farm?+
No-till hemp planting works after the soil is at least 50 F, existing weeds are controlled, and the drill places seed into moisture with firm contact. Penn State allows no-till with a burndown. HFGA also allows a low-till disc. The buyer still comes before the drill.
No-till hemp planting is a seedbed choice, not a different crop. The seed still has to reach moisture, sit at a published depth, and come up in a row that was weed-free on day one. Penn State's production guide says hemp can be established no-till when a preplant burndown has controlled the weeds already growing. The association's spring planting guide recommends a low-tillage disc and allows no-till when that is the system you already run. Industrial hemp is not marijuana.
Penn State's 2024 risk guide puts the calendar in Pennsylvania at mid-April to early June, and only once soil is at least 50°F. It also says later planting can establish poorly. Cornell, for Ursa Alta in New York, has described a mid-May start. Copy the soil temperature. Do not copy another state's week.
Any burn-down product has to be labeled for the use you are making of it. This page does not set a rate. The drill settings that go with the seed are in the depth and rate guide.
When No-Till Hemp Planting Fits the Field
Use no-till hemp planting where residue is thin enough for a small seed to find soil, and where last year's weeds are dead before the drill arrives. Penn State wants a firm, level, relatively fine seedbed when you till, the same condition used for forage establishment. No-till trades that tillage for an undisturbed slot. If the slot smears, or hairpins residue around the seed, you did not get the contact the system requires.
Hemp dislikes crusting, compaction, and wet heavy clay. Those failures happen in no-till and in tilled fields. Tile and crop history matter more than the slogan on the drill. A field that ponds is a bad hemp field in either system.
The 2024 guide's weed-free seedbed can come from tillage, a cover crop, or herbicide. Pick one and finish it before seeding. A cover that is still green, or a burndown that has not killed the existing stand, will outrun hemp seedlings. Fiber's dense stand and grain's lighter stand both need that head start. Density is not a substitute for a dirty seedbed.
How to Run No-Till Hemp Planting with a Drill
Set depth against moisture, then check the slot every round. Hemp planting depth in the extension guides runs from about 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch. Cornell's trial went to about 1 inch in a rolled no-till slot. Stay inside a band you can explain.
Soil Temperature for No-Till Hemp Planting
Fifty degrees Fahrenheit is the floor in the 2024 Pennsylvania guide, after frost risk has passed. Seed in colder soil sits there for weeds and damping-off. Rutgers notes seedlings are prone to damping-off and that dry seedbeds cut germination. Wait for 50°F and for moisture in the seed zone. If those two do not arrive together, delaying a week is cheaper than replanting. The guide's own caution is that planting later than early June can establish poorly in that region. Watch the forecast for a packing rain between seeding and emergence.
The Drill for No-Till Hemp Planting
Cornell's 2025 grain strips at Geneva used a John Deere 1560 no-till drill, 10 foot, at about 1 inch, on June 11, and rolled the field immediately. Rolling firms the slot. It is not a finish pass on wet ground. If the roll glazes the surface, stop. Check seeding depth in the row, not on the monitor alone, because residue lifts the openers. The seed tag still sets pure live seed per acre. No-till does not change purity or germination.
Residue, Covers, and the Slot
Heavy cereal residue is where no-till hemp planting fails even when the calendar is right. Move residue off the row or seed where the mat is thin. A rye cover, which Penn State's production budgets include for erosion and weed suppression ahead of hemp, has to be managed so it is not a mat the seed cannot penetrate. Low-till with a disc, the association's default, is the better tool when residue is thick. No-till is the better tool when the surface is already firm and clean.
What No-Till Hemp Planting Does Not Change
The buyer, the variety, and the THC sample are the same jobs they were in a tilled field.
Book the Crop First
Sell the crop before you order seed. Fiber and grain do not go to the same buyer, and they do not want the same stand. Certified seed with a variety the partner has approved is the bag. A no-till drill will plant the wrong variety just as efficiently as a tilled one.
Keep Fiber and Grain Calendars Apart
Grain harvest on Penn State's production guide is around 70% ripe seed, plants still green, moisture often 22% to 30%, then drying. Fiber is cut from early bloom toward seed set and retted. No-till hemp planting does not merge those harvests. If the contract is grain, do not use the fiber rate. The nitrogen note still depends on the previous crop. Tillage does not replace a soil test.
Price the Stand You Can Deliver
Commodity pricing is the board. A no-till acre saves passes only if the stand emerges. Replanting after a crust or a cold soil spends the savings. The FAQ is where neighbors' license questions belong. Trust is a weed-free row and a named buyer. Education is 50°F, contact, and depth. Profit is a stand that did not have to be seeded twice.
FAQ
Quick answers from this article.
What soil temperature does Penn State publish for hemp seeding?+
The March 2024 risk guide says plant from mid-April to early June once soil is at least 50 F. Later planting can mean poor establishment. That window is a Pennsylvania guide, not every state.
Does the HFGA spring guide allow no-till hemp?+
Yes. It recommends a low-tillage disc for the seedbed, and it says chisel plow and no-till methods are acceptable when the grower prefers them.
What drill setup did Cornell use in the 2025 grain trial?+
Cornell's Geneva grain strips used a John Deere 1560 no-till drill at about 1 inch deep on June 11, 2025, and the field was rolled right after seeding.
Why roll the field after no-till hemp seeding?+
Hemp seed is small. Rolling closes the slot and firms soil around the seed so it can imbibe. Packing a wet surface into a crust is a different operation and a good way to lose the stand.
Does no-till hemp planting remove the need for a buyer?+
No. Tillage does not create a market. Book the fiber or grain buyer, and the variety they accept, before you drill. A clean no-till stand with no contract is still an unsold crop.
