What Is a Wellness Yarn?

What is a wellness yarn?+
A wellness yarn is the plant-based yarn a mill knits or weaves, with hemp as the graded fiber. Counts differ: 40/2 hemp-lyocell, US hemp with Supima, or 24s hemp with wool.
A wellness yarn is the plant-based yarn a mill knits or weaves. Imperium Fiber's journal puts hemp at the center and then splits the cone by job: plied 40/2 hemp-lyocell, US-grown hemp spun with Supima cotton, or 24s hemp with wool. The count is the product. A sheet yarn is not an activewear ply.
Industrial hemp in this yarn is Farm Bill fiber at or below 0.3% delta-9 THC. It is not marijuana. What a wellness yarn is, in Imperium's words, is the cone. Heartland Industries produces Imperium Fiber. HFGA is affiliated with Heartland, and this article says that in the open.
What a Wellness Yarn Is
A wellness yarn is an input, not a finished cloth and not a medical claim. The mill still chooses gauge, sett, and finish. What the definition fixes is the fiber bill: plant cellulose in the body of the yarn, not polyester or nylon filament. Hemp is the fiber that has to grade. Lyocell, Supima cotton, or wool is the partner that the end use actually needs.
That split is why "one hemp yarn for everything" fails in a mill. The journal index keeps activewear, home, and outerwear as separate notes. The grade language on our side is the HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard.
Where Hemp Wins Inside a Wellness Yarn
Hemp wins here when the cone is buyable: a count a spinner can repeat, a grade a contract can name, and a registered product that is not dressed up as a certificate.
The 40/2 Wellness Yarn Is the Activewear and Swim Cone
Imperium specifies wellness yarn for activewear as plied 40/2 hemp-lyocell, about Ne 20 resultant. One cone is meant to cover a high-hold bra through a base layer. Compression is the knit, not a thicker plastic yarn. Swim uses that same ply, built for wet strength and low torque. Read wellness yarn for activewear and wellness yarn for swimwear. When recovery is required, the elastane percentage is disclosed. It is not hidden inside a nylon filament.
Supima Counts Are the Home Wellness Yarn
Home textiles use a different wellness yarn: US-grown hemp spun with Supima cotton, in counts such as 24s/1, 38s/1, and 40s/1. Imperium calls it a sheet yarn, not an activewear ply. Our own planning bands match that split. 24s/1 and 38s/1 cotton-hemp sit around 160–260 GSM and 110–190 GSM. 120–200 thread-count bed linen is in reach when count and sett match. The spin itself is covered in US hemp with Supima. The category note is wellness yarn for home textiles.
A 24s Hemp and Wool Wellness Yarn Is the Outerwear Cone
Outerwear starts at 24s hemp with wool for jackets and mid-layers. Wool keeps the insulation. Hemp is the cost and strength partner, not a substitute for a waterproof shell. Wellness yarn for outerwear is the spec. It should not be warped into sheeting.
How a Mill Buys a Wellness Yarn
A mill buys a count, a grade, and a disclosure. The marketing word does not appear on the cone label as the spec.
Name the Hemp Grade Before the Wellness Yarn Count
Cotton-system counts need cottonized bast. That is Grade TX-A, not TX-B long-line. TX-A is what certified seed and a clean decortication have to deliver, under AOSCA seed rules and a USDA AMS license. Heartland's published line is that this hemp uses about 95% less water than cotton. Treat that as Heartland's figure. The grade is still the contract term.
Keep Filament Out of the Wellness Yarn Body
Wellness yarn instead of polyester and instead of nylon are the journal pieces that say the plant cone replaces filament. The cloth that follows is the wellness fabric definition: skin contact, no plastic microfiber from a polyester ground. A polyester alternative only holds if the body yarn is actually plant fiber. Our polyester note is the HFGA version of that line.
Registration Tells You Who Spun the Wellness Yarn
Imperium Fiber is the first registry entry at Grade TX-A. It is registered, not certified, until a lot verification record exists. That limit is the point of the registration article and the registry page. The yarn and the fabric together are introduced in the first wellness fabric and yarn.
Trust is a count you can repeat and a grade you can name. Education is not using the gym ply on a sheet warp. Profit is a spinner who will book TX-A hemp because the cone already has a construction, not because a hangtag said wellness.
FAQ
Quick answers from this article.
Is a wellness yarn the same cone for every fabric?+
No. Imperium's journal uses plied 40/2 hemp-lyocell for activewear and swim, US hemp with Supima at counts such as 24s/1 and 38s/1 for sheets, and 24s hemp with wool for outerwear.
What does 40/2 hemp-lyocell mean on a wellness yarn ticket?+
Imperium describes wellness yarn for activewear as plied 40/2 hemp-lyocell with a resultant cotton count around Ne 20. One cone covers a bra through a base layer. The knit sets compression.
Can wellness yarn still include elastane?+
The plant yarn replaces nylon or polyester filament. When a knit needs recovery, Imperium says the elastane percentage is disclosed. That elastane is not a polyester body yarn.
Which hemp grade is a wellness yarn mill actually buying?+
Cotton-system wellness yarn needs bast a spinner can run, which is Grade TX-A on the HFGA US Hemp Textile Standard: the blend and cottonized grade, not long-line wet-spun TX-B.
Where is the wellness yarn definition written?+
Imperium Fiber's journal defines wellness yarn as the plant-based cone a mill knits or weaves. Heartland Industries produces Imperium Fiber. HFGA is affiliated with Heartland and says so.
